TFSI timing chain

Postby bluey03 » Wed May 06, 2015 9:02 pm

Hi gents

Currently planning to replace the timing chain on a Mkv gti tfsi. Looking for a D.I.Y write up on this replacement. From abit of online search I think you need a special tool to hold the cams in position? I couldn't find a proper write up with photos, any links to related D.I.Y would be appreciated or advise??

Are you reffering to the cam chain on the RHS of the engine cover?

The TFSI is driven by a belt which runs on the left hand side of the engine. The Golf VI runs on a chain system

Cambelt is on the left hand side ,the cam chain and guide rail is on the right hand side of the motor this is what causes the diesel like idling on the TFSI motors when it starts to get on a bit in life.

I read that by changing the cam chain and tensioner, it would rid the car of that diesel-like sound we mostly suffer from. I would do it if it did actually do that, but has anyone had any success with that? Whats the costs for the parts?

 Yes the cam chain & guide rail ( tensioner ) on the RHS of the engine cover.
I've read stories of failure. Worries me alil i think its time for me to replace the chain and that tensioner. anyone has links to D.I.Y's? VAG cafe has the esc tuning service kit for this ....

Give you an idea of cost should the chain snap and cause catastrophic failure inside the motor an Audi club member was quoted R98K for repairs and labour through a Audi dealer. He eventually was lucky enough to find a second hand motor for around R50K.

Another Audi member was very lucky when His chain snapped he was quick to stop the car damage total was around R30K.

Woah woah woah - you are trying to tell me that the TFSI engine is belt AND chain driven? As far as I know:

TFSI - Belt driven engine. Known issues with belt snapping, bending valves. Replace along with waterpump.
TSI - Chain driven engines. Known issues with timing chain tensioner.
