Nice test but...............

Did anyone do the fundamental test of what these intakes replace? Basically the air filtering system protecting your engine. Which intake best protects your engine while giving you the best gains? Might not matter in a single dyno run, but over 100000km, it might!

Good point. Stock air box will always win that one. I'm running my stock box since Sunday, and while I feel a loss in immediate throttle response, the car feels smoother in normal driving.

These aftermarket intakes use far more expensive and better built filters than oem mass produced stuff, they multi layered, donot restrict as bad as oem filters and protect better. If anything they extend longevity.

While I agree with you to certain extent , there has to be some sacrifice for the power gains ?

Besides the intake noise ( which not everybody sees as a negative  ) , there must be some sort of detrimental effect or surely these intakes would be part of the OEM option ?

These car are designed for various markets and for various individuals. It needs to cater for desert conditions where dust particles are more prevalent and alot finer than in SA as well as cater for the old man or mother who want to drive a car that is quiet and refined.

Also consider that parts are are used across vehicle models, some models demanding even further refinement of drive than with the GTi. This means then that the intake system does have the potential for further development to reduce restrictions caused by the need for a quiet drive or for catering for extremely fine particles.

So the gains we seen with aftermarket intakes are not because the manufacturer has designed the oem one badly but rather because OEM intakes have to cover various customer needs and conditions and as such have to be restrictive in design.
